Where to buy raw semi-precious stones/gems for carving/cabochon?

I'm a budding and self-taught stone carver. Unfortunately, I really have no idea where to actually buy the jade and other raw materials that I would like to carve/cabochon. I've been carving in soapstone and alabaster because that's all I have access to. I'd like to move on. Also, I have no clue what the going rates are. I don't want to be taken advantage of. Please don't answer with "ebay" or another equally obvious answer, I'm not daft. I'd like specifics please.

Your best bet would be to put your location in Google Maps and the Search Nearby for lapidary supplies and talk to the people whose names come up about exactly what you want and if they have saws and stones you don't want, ask them for the nearest place to go. You might also ask if there is a lapidary club in the area, like the one here in Dallas.
Having a local supplier gives you the chance to pick out the stone you want and a possibility that if you make good stuff, they might sell it for you.
