Engagement ring cracked!?
I received a beautiful engagement ring just a little over 2 months ago. White gold with a 1 carat green sapphire in a bezel setting. I just noticed what looked like a black spot in it and realized that it also had a chip on the edge of the stone, right next to the setting. This just appeared in the last day or so and I absolutely don't recall bumping it on ANYTHING! I am pretty devastated and wonder if I have any recourse with the jeweler or if I'm just out of luck. The ring cost almost $2000! I have never heard of anything like this happening before. Sapphires are supposed to be a durable stone that can be worn everyday! It was purchased at a small local shop. Does anyone know what I might reasonably expect when I take it back to show the jeweler?
I would definitely take the ring to a different jeweler and ask about the crack and what it means to the value of the ring. Then, after finding out what may be the truth about the sapphire, take it back to the jeweler and let him tell you HIS story about the stone. I have never heard of a diamond cracking, but I am not sure about a sapphire. Just have it checked out in case there is a flaw that will keep spreading and eventually crack the entire stone.
