Eight Tips for Peace (and Love) on Valentineās Day
Oh no, it is almost here that dreaded day of cupid’s chaos. That marathon of manufactured mush known as Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and you are starting to feel the pressure. Relax, you can have a peaceful day on February 14, just follow these tips and love the results.
1) Tell your partner what YOU want. If you really want to go out for a fancy dinner, then say so! If you must have red roses and champagne and caviar, then tell him. It is not likely that the love of your life is a psychic. So stop assuming that he knows what you want and stop saying, “Well if he can’t figure it out I can’t help him.” Yes, you can help and you are helping everyone when you spare us the drama of your latest “I can’t believe he forgot Valentine’s Day” rant.
2) Ask your partner what THEY want. Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching and you don’t know what to do. You don’t know if your partner wants a big fuss or would like to just ignore the whole thing, you do know that you don’t want to blow it. Quit trying to guess and just ask them. If they say “Oh, you know what I want”, then refer them to item one above.
3) Be reasonable. Don’t rack up tons of debt just trying to get someone’s attention. If you are not living ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous’ don’t expect your partner to buy you a three carat diamond pendant or Porsche Boxster. Who cares what your friend’s cousin’s sister received from her rich soon to be ex-boyfriend?
4) Remember this is ONE day. True love will be with you every day of the year. Even when your true love is sick or annoying or annoyingly sickening – they will still be your true love. So don’t make major decisions about your relationship based on this one day.
5) Don’t lead someone on just to have a date. Don’t make a Valentine’s Day date just because you don’t want to be alone on this big commercialized day of love. If you don’t have special feelings for someone, don’t let them think that you do. It is OK to sit this one out. It is not OK to lead someone on.
6) Leave your single friends alone. They are fine, they have full lives and they are not missing out even if right now they don’t have a significant other. They don’t need you to send them out on a blind date on Valentine’s Day. They don’t need your pity. If you really care about them, then send them a great card or call them and tell them how happy you are that they are in your life.
7) Don’t let the pressure get to you. If you want to stay home and have a quiet evening then stay home and have a quiet evening. If you and your loved one decide to celebrate, then select a celebration that works for you.
8) It’s about LOVE. Even if this is a big commercialized day, it is about love. Not just romantic love. The love you feel for your parents, your children, your friends, your community, the environment, whatever and whoever it is that you truly love and value. So find YOUR way to celebrate that love. In the end that is what truly matters.
