How can you tell a platinum ring from white gold.?
Recently I purchased a diamond ring and I thought it was platinum, because thats what the salesperson told me. Later someone told me that the ring was white gold, because she looked on the inside and it was not inscribed pl (which stands for platinum), I later went back to the jewelry store and she told me that wasn't true.
A platinum or white gold ring should have the appropriate mark. Be it 14k, 18k/750, most likely for gold, or Pt pt950 Plat.
Otherwise, it can be difficult to tell the difference between the two metals. It's pretty suspicious that the ring doesn't have a marking at all.
Platinum is heavier and most importantly whiter than white gold. They add additional metal to alloy white gold such as silver, palladium, or nickel to make it look white. They also treat the surface with rhodium to make it look perfectly white.
However, over time, if the rhodium wears you can see that a white gold ring isn't as "white" as platinum. It will have a bit of a slight yellow tinge from the yellow gold base metal. Also platinum wears better over time. In finely detailed jewelry platinum will hold details better.
In the end, if you made a significant investment in the ring, I'd take it to a quality jeweler for an appraisal. They should be able to tell you if the ring is platinum or not.
